Pelican Art Gallery Celebrates Chris Clark with Motown’s 50th
Motown star Chris Clark is an incredibly talented artist in many ways. In addition to success as a Motown soul singer, Clark is an accomplished visual artist, melding her photography with digitage techniques that engage the eye & warm the heart.
In 2003 at the New York Art Expo, Motown introduced Chris Clark as a visual artist with her spectrum of artwork featuring the familiar faces of Motown stars Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, Rich James, the Temptation and many others. Now this portfolio of artwork is available for viewing & sale through the Pelican Art Gallery.
“Chris has a keen eye for composition and is dedicated to representing the beat & emotion of the subjects in her Motown series. It’s truly an extraordinary collection of memories presented in limited edition series worthy of any Motown art collection.” says Linda Postenrieder, co-owner of Pelican Art Gallery. Digitage is a combination of photography, montage and image sculpture using digital techniques. Much like the impressionistic art of the late 1800s, digital art is evolving as an accepted art form. Clark is at the forefront of this artistic movement.
Clark is an American soul singer who recorded for Motown Records. She became famous in England as the "white Negress" (a nickname meant as a compliment), because the six-foot platinum blonde, blue-eyed soul singer toured with fellow Motown artists who were predominantly black. Recording on the V.I.P. label, one of several Motown imprints, Chris Clark is still acknowledged by Northern Soul fans for songs such as 1965's "Do Right Baby Do Right" and 1966's "Love's Gone Bad." Another of her notable songs was the 1967 single "I Want To Go Back There Again." Clark managed to top the R&B singles chart. "Love's Gone Bad" made #105 pop, and #41 R&B in 1966. She was nominated for an Academy Award as co-writer of the screenplay for "Lady Sings the Blues," a 1972 film starring Diana Ross, Billy Dee Williams, and Richard Pryor.
